We're a retired couple who sold a home in Anacortes, WA in 2022 after purchasing a bareland strata lot in Bowser, BC earlier that year. Our vision was to design and build a passive home that was as close to net zero as our budget would allow. Pre-design was done with the help of a Vancouver Island architect, then we continued the design process with a design/build team from Nanaimo.
We researched Vancouver Island builders that had a portfolio of passive house builds behind them and that led us to our skilled designer, and, to our Nanaimo-based custom home builder. These exceptional designers and builders came with excellent reputations for creating homes that are both beautiful and functional.
The overall design direction we followed was a blending of our ideas for a modern home with assistance from our design/build team. We were focused on what we called "Northwest industrial" with hints of wood and soft colors inside while going with metal and cement board materials outside. Our objective was to build an affordable "near net zero" home aligned with the passive house philosopy.
